Dozens of students in the southern city of Nabatieh marched Wednesday against Saudi Arabia's execution earlier this month of Shiite cleric Nimr al-Nimr. The students, from different universities and schools, marched down streets in the city holding banners and shouting anti-U.S., Saudi, and Israeli slogans.
“Death to America," "Death to Israel,” and "Death to Al Saud," the demonstrators shouted. They also held placards reading “the awakening will not be suppressed," in reference to a popular movement for Shiite rights Nimr spearheaded in eastern Saudi Arabia in 2011.
Nimr, a vocal critic of the ruling Al Saud family among the Shiite minority in Saudi Arabia, had come to be seen as a leader of the sect's younger activists.
