SIDON, Lebanon: Bus drivers in the southern city of Sidon staged a rally to protest authorities' failure to provide them with an alternative to Nejmeh Square bus stop.

The parking spot was bought by a businessman, but the plan for the land remains unclear.

Authorities asked the drivers to evacuate the area three months ago and the decision went into effect at the end of last month.

Sidon Municipality and MP Bahia Hariri had contacted Speaker Nabih Berri to resolve the matter.

"What happened in principle is rejected," head of the Unions and Leagues of Land Transport Bassam Tleis said.

He said that authorities should have discussed the alternatives before implementing the decision, as it would impact around 600 to 700 families.

"Officials are keen to preserve the dignity of all drivers," Tleis added.

Tleis said that a "temporary" parking area will be used for five to six weeks to facilitate the work of the drivers.

He added that contacts will be conducted to reach a solution, revealing that the same spot might be used again but with a different management.

"The municipality will be managing the new parking space," he said.

Sidon Mayor Mohammad Saudi said that the municipality backs the drivers.
