Dozens of shop owners protested Friday the destruction of parts of their shops for reportedly encroaching on land owned by the Litani River Authority.

The operation was aimed at removing illegal structures near an irrigation ditch that the authority managed. The approximately 60 affected shops lie just north of Tyre, on the coastal Tyre-Sidon road. A 1.5 by 250 meters plot of the land on which the shops are built is considered the LRA’s property, while local landowner Omran Fakhri owns the rest. Fakhri was arrested ahead of Friday’s operation and
is being held by security forces until its completion
