On 21 Jan 17, a joint operation between the Army's Intelligence and Information Branch managed to foil a suicide attack in  Hamra-Beirut street, arresting the would-be suicide bomber. The suicide attacker was wearing an explosive belt as he walked into widely-known Costa coffee shop which was the target.  The would-be suicide bomber was identified as 25-year-old Lebanese Omar Al-Assi. Initial reports had said that the suspect was Palestinian. He was carrying explosives weighing about 2 kilograms. Security agents moved him to a nearby hospital for treatment under heavy security as he sustained wounds after an altercation with the security forces. Security forces deployed heavily in the capital Beirut in the aftermath of the incident.
