Conflict Incident Report
Round of clashes in Zahle
Date of incident:
August 28, 1975 to September 3, 1975
Actors/Parties Involved:
As-Saiqa (Vanguard of the Popular Liberation War)
Fighting stopped to a large extent on June 30 when the government announced that a cabinet was formed, reached with Syrian mediation. It was agreed that the barricades would be dismantled, heavy weapons withdrawn, and ISF units deployed. Still, sporadic attacks took place that evolved into a new round of clashes between August 28 and September 3, 1975, mainly between the Christian-populated city of Zahleh and gunmen from neighboring villages with the support of as-Sa’iqa. A string of abductions on both sides and summary executions took place. The fighting included shelling residential areas as well as looting, destruction of property, and gunfire.
