BEIRUT: Pictures and banners that had been raised in east Sidon villages to welcome Information Minister Melhem Riachi have been vandalized, a source told The Daily Star Sunday.

“This attack is against the Lebanese government as the minister is a part of the Cabinet,” Lebanese Forces official Maroun Maroun said, urging security forces to uncover the identity of the perpetrators.

The banners were lifted in the predominantly Christian villages east of Sidon, including Abra and Majdalyoun.

Riachi, an LF minister, began his visit to Sidon and its surrounding areas Sunday, as scheduled.

After a visit to the local communities in the area, Riachi said that the coming 2017 elections will be shortly delayed to prepare for the elections.

Parliamentary elections were originally scheduled to take place between May 21 and June 21, yet political deadlock is expected to delay elections beyond June.

The Parliament has yet to endorse a new electoral law.

This security incident was mapped according to the closest possible location.
