Police arrest man for theft, embezzlement
A Lebanese man who told police he had been attacked and robbed was arrested after his story was proven false, an Internal Security Forces statement said Sunday.
The suspect, an employee at the Abed Tahan home appliances showroom in Mkalles, called police in Jdeideh claiming his employer’s money had been stolen to cover up his own embezzlement of the company’s funds, the ISF statement said.
The 32-year-old suspect claimed one of two men attacked him with a razor and threatened to stab him in the stomach in front of Byblos Bank before leaving with $25,000, the ISF said.
However, police agents could not find razor cuts on his arms, just scratches that were barely visible, the ISF added.
He was later interrogated and admitted that the robbery never occurred and that he invented the story to cover up the money he embezzled from his employer.
The envelope he claimed was stolen contained $3,900 and LL1,400,000 ($930).
