Palestinian protesters Friday flocked to Downtown Beirut to reaffirm their staunch rejection of what they consider a decision by the U.N. Relief Works Agency to "gradually abandon" them.
After three consecutive weeks of protests in Palestinian refugee camps across Lebanon against modifications to the agency's health care program, the biggest protest yet was held near the U.N. headquarters in Beirut.
Hundreds of angry Palestinians held banners describing their demand for hospitalization as one of their most basic rights.
"The next protest will be inside your headquarters," a placard held by an old man warned.
Another one read: "UNRWA cut aims at strangling the Palestinian refugees and pushing them towards a suicide migration."
Ali Barakeh, the representative of Hamas in Lebanon, accused UNRWA of "killing Palestinian refugees in Lebanon," emphasizing that the agency's services should continue until "the refugees return home."
He also called on the Lebanese state to support the demands of the Palestinians to preserve their "common interests."
Fatah Secretary Fathi Abu al-Ardat urged the U.N. to intervene and force UNRWA to back down on its decision.
