The Lebanese army was able to obstruct overnight a militant group from infiltrating Lebanon through the Wadi Hmayed area in the northeastern town of Arsal.

“The army clashed with armed militants in Wadi Hmayed and obstructed their attempts to infiltrate the town where they clashed with some of the residents pushing them to flee to the town's outskirts,” an army communique said on Thursday.

“The army was able to kill and wound several of the militants including Khaled Ahmed al-Wawa who was arrested and transported to hospital for treatment,” the statement added.

Several detained suspects are allegedly affiliated to Islamist groups, whose fighters remain entrenched on the outskirts of Arsal after they overran the village and engaged in battles with the army.

Arsal witnesses tension among locals and armed Syrians on the back ground of abduction and counter-abduction operations, National News Agency correspondent reported on Wednesday.

It is to note that the citizen Hussein Seif Eddine was abducted on Monday from a shop owned by member of Ezzeddine family in Arsal; duly members of Ezzedine family abducted Amer and Ahmad Karnabi who were released yesterday (Tuesday) in a good initiative and interference from Lebanese Army Intelligence.

However, when the captors did not release Seif Eddine by today morning, a number of young people from Noah and Ezzeddine families opened fire, captured 35 displaced Syrians from the Syrian Kara village and banned any activities in a neighborhood resided by Syrians in the village.

Arsal is currently witnessing mobilizations for Lebanese Army at Arsal village surroundings and Al-Masyada region and cordoned off the village as well, the reporter said.
