A member of the Mieh Mieh Palestinian refugee camp’s security forces was shot and killed overnight..

The camp near the southern city of Sidon was tense after the Palestinian National Security Forces member, identified as Mohammad Abu Mugheisib, born in 1994, was killed by unidentified gunmen in the camp.

Mugheisib reportedly belonged to the Fatah Movement, a Palestinian faction that makes up a large portion of the security force.

A source inside the camp said Mugheisib was heading towards a Palestinian security force outpost around 1 a.m. when he was killed. His body was taken to Sidon’s Hamshari Hospital.

The assassination was followed by heavy gunfire directed into the air by members of the security forces, and Fatah centers inside the camp were on high alert.

Mieh Mieh is one of 12 Palestinian refugee camps across Lebanon that are home to the majority of the over 170,000 Palestinian refugees living in the country. Lebanese security forces are de facto not allowed into the camps where internal power struggles between vying factions often lead to hostilities.
