A man was shot dead Wednesday in the northern city of Tripoli after failing to comply with the Internal Security Forces’ orders to stop at a checkpoint and speeding past, the ISF said.

The ISF unit that shot and killed Nazih Toufik Hammoud - born in 1983 - was arrested and investigations are underway, according to the statement released by the security body.

Nazih was shot in the back while he was in his blue Mitsubishi car, after he "did not comply with the orders and tried to escape by car at a tremendous speed," the ISF said.

Hammoud was transported from Tripoli’s Abi Samra area to Shifa Hospital, but succumbed to his wounds.

"The General Directorate of the Internal Security Forces expresses its deep regret over this painful incident," the statement read.
