BEIRUT: Police arrested a man suspected of extorting Syrian laborers in Beirut’s southern suburbs, authorities said.

Police in Mount Lebanon’s Mreijeh police station apprehended the 47-year-old Lebanese national who is believed to have shaken down Syrian laborers living in Hay al-Sellom, said an internal Security Forces statement.

Five Syrian workers testified to the ISF that the suspect, identified as T.M., kept a daily log of his extortion, which had the names of some 60 workers, ISF added.

Every morning, each worker had to pay LL2000 ($1.3). If they refused the suspect would impose a fine of LL5000 ($ 3.33).

The workers pressed charges against the suspect, who denied the charges.

Police confiscated the log and referred the suspect to the judiciary.
