Lebanese Army arrests several suspects over terror links in east Lebanon
The Lebanese Army Friday arrested several suspects over terror links in east Lebanon, a security source told The Daily Star. Lebanese Army raided the house of Lebanese citizen Bashir Hujeiri in east Lebanon’s border town of Arsal in the Bekaa Valley under a hail of bullets from the Army, the source said.
Hujeiri was detained over alleged ties to Jabhat Fatah al-Sham, previously known as Nusra Front. A number of Syrian nationals were also apprehended on similar charges. Extremist groups maintain an armed presence on the east Lebanon border with Syria. Hundreds of militants belonging to Daesh and Jabhat Fatah al-Sham are holed up on Arsal’s outskirts. Lebanese troops frequently launch strikes against the militant groups to keep them at bay. The extremists briefly overran Arsal in August 2014, taking over 30 soldiers and police hostage. Nine soldiers are still believed to be held captive by ISIS. Extremist groups maintain an armed presence on the east Lebanon border with Syria.
