The Lebanese Army arrested a Palestinian in south Lebanon suspected of masterminding foiled terror plots across the country, a security source told The Daily Star.

Palestinian factions in south Lebanon’s Ain al-Hilweh camp handed Khaled Massaad, also known as Khaled Sayyed, over to a Lebanese Army Intelligence unit at an Army checkpoint to the west of the camp near Sidon governmental hospital, the source said.

Massaad is also accused of leading a terror cell that allegedly plotted attacks during the Holy month of Ramadan in Beirut and Sidon, the source said, adding that the cell was uncovered by Lebanese General Security.

An unidentified spokesman from Hamas Movement also confirmed the handover, adding that the apprehension “is a result of joint efforts by Hamas and Osbat al-Ansar to maintain security and stability.”

A statement from an identified source, circulated in Ain al-Hilweh Saturday afternoon described the handover as an "act of treason for the sake of the apostates."

Security agencies have been cracking down on sleeper extremist cells to deter any security breach.

Ain al-Hilweh, notorious for harboring fugitives, has been the scene of clashes between Palestinian factions and extremists taking shelter in the camp, home to around 100,000 Palestinian refugees.

This security incident was mapped according to the closest possible location.
