A man suspected of stealing from worshipers in a Sidon mosque was arrested by the Internal Security Forces, the agency announced Thursday.

The suspect, identified as Syrian national Sh.M., born in 1979, was arrested at the entrance of Sidon’s Hariri mosque on Jan. 23.

Ahead of the arrest, the ISF monitored the suspect and found that on at least seven occasions, he had stolen items from mourners or worshipers gathered in the mosque. The suspect's brother has also reportedly acted as an accomplice. The ISF said the amounts stolen ranged between LL300,000 ($200) and LL500,000 ($333).

The suspect had prior convictions related to pickpocketing and drug abuse and had been released from prison just two months earlier.

He was referred to the judiciary for further investigations.
