Security forces investigated Tuesday a gas canister with “radioactive material” printed on the side that was found on the shore near Beirut’s southern suburb of Ouzai, a security source said told The Daily Star.
The small canister also had “Made in the USA” on it, the source added.
The Lebanese Army’s engineering regiment was called to the scene to inspect the canister while security forces cordoned off the area.
News of the possibly dangerous find caused panic among some residents of the area, the source said.
Environment Minister Tarek Khatib also headed to the site with a team from the Lebanese Atomic Energy Commission.
"[Experts] are saying that [the canister] was put there and was not washed up on the shore by the sea," the source said.
