The Lebanese Army Wednesday shelled militant posts on the outskirts of Ras Baalbek after a mortar bomb struck one of its positions, wounding five soldiers.
An Army statement said militants targeted a post in the Harf al-Jaresh area, near the site of clashes between the Army and ISIS in January.
“Militants holed up on the outskirts of the area fired several mortar bombs on military posts in the Harf al-Jaresh area, wounding five soldiers,” the statement said. “The Army is responding to the sources of fire with the adequate weaponry.”
The position is used to monitor movements of militants on Lebanon’s border with Syria, it said.
A senior Army official said ISIS militants fired around five mortar bombs at the post: “Four landed in areas around the post and one hit inside. The soldiers were slightly wounded and treated at the scene.” The source asked not be named. The official said the Army hit back at ISIS posts and that no other exchange of fire occurred.
