Fishermen in Jnah’s St. Simon area staged a protest Sunday against coastal pollution in their district they say is threatening their livelihoods.
Fishermen in the area say they have been unable to fish, as wastewater is being redirected from Beirut to Jnah’s seaside. The waste-filled beaches, they say, are exacerbating poor conditions in the impoverished coastal strip, located just north of Rafik Hariri International Airport.
Local media reports suggested that the sewage has been redirected to the St. Simon area from the capital’s Ramlet al-Baida beach since the controversial Eden Bay Resort began operation in June.
