Families of Islamist detainees demand amnesty
Families of detained Islamists renewed their demands that their families members be included in a general amnesty.
"All we demand is a general amnesty," cried one protester in the southern city of Sidon.
The demonstrators, mostly women, and children set out to al-Bizri mosque after Friday prayers, holding photographs of the detainees.
A sit-in preceded the protest, where the mother of one of the detainees spoke. "We have been demanding amnesty for our children for more than a year" Um Omar al-Barakat told the crowd, "the matter is coming soon, and it's not in our favor."
Last month, Agriculture Minister Ghazi Zeaiter said the Amal Movement was working to secure a general amnesty for those convicted of nonviolent crimes. Families of Islamist detainees have protested multiple times across Lebanon, asking for their family members to be included in the bill.
