State Security Wednesday arrested a man suspected of "promoting" drugs in Beirut's southern suburbs, a statement from the agency said.

The Palestinian man, identified as Asaad M., was reportedly arrested in the vicinity of the Shatila Palestinian refugee camp while promoting drugs. Drug promotion charges are usually leveled against persons carrying quantities of drugs and possibly selling them on to others, but lacking the paraphernalia or business scale of a drug dealer.

A large quantity of illicit substances was found in Asaad M.'s possession at the time of the arrest, the statement said.

During investigations conducted by security personnel, the suspect was found to have previously had charges brought against him for drug promotion.

The suspect was handed over to the judiciary.
