A wanted Palestinian man was shot dead late at night at the Palestinian refugee camp of Shatila, sparking outrage from his supporters, who surrounded the hospital he was transferred to, according to a security source.

A dispute escalated between Bilal Akar and his brother Jamal on the one hand and Samir Badran on the other, leaving both Bilal and Badran dead, the source told The Daily Star.

The dispute also left Jamal, who was transferred to Sahel General Hospital, in a critical condition. He is under tight security monitoring in order to be arrested if and when his health allows, the source explained.

The source said that the Akar brothers are wanted on dozens of arrest warrants for imposing safety money, theft and reckless shooting.

Badran, who is also wanted on several arrest warrants, was transferred to a hospital inside the camp, but soon succumbed to his wounds, the source said.

The dispute escalated over matters related to safety money, the source said.

The incident prompted Bilal's supporters to head to Makassed General Hospital, where he had been transferred, to protest. The Lebanese Army worked to disperse the crowds, the security source noted.

The Army has reportedly upped its security measures at the camp's entrances.
