Heavy clashes broke out between the joint security force and drug dealers in the north Lebanon Beddawi Palestinian refugee camp, wounding a drug dealer and causing extensive material damage, state media reported.

The clashes began at dawn as a dispute between drug dealers, prompting the joint security force to intervene.

The skirmishes then turned into heavy gun battles between the security force and the drug dealers.

The force initially arrested one drug dealer going by the name “Al Tablouj” while the others remain at large, the National News Agency said.

Later in the day, the force arrested four other suspects involved in the clashes.

The clashes prompted the United Nations refugee agency to suspend operations at the camp as schools closed for the day.

Palestinian factions met at 8 a.m. to discuss the security situation at the camp and agreed to crack down on such gangs.

The factions also agreed to hand over those who were arrested to the Lebanese Army.

On Wednesday, March 8, fighting broke out following a dispute in the camp, leaving one person dead and three others wounded.

The Beddawi refugee camp was established by UNRWA in 1955, five kilometers north of Tripoli.

UNRWA says that its population almost doubled from 15,000 to around 30,000, following the destruction of neighboring refugee camp Nahr al-Bared.
