Residents of Barja protested Sunday against a new project that would see a garbage landfill and dump created in a Chouf valley, in a demonstration organized by the local municipality. Residents gathered in the town’s Jamal Abdul Nasser Square to voice their opposition to the garbage disposal plan in the valley that separates the Chouf towns of Barja and Sibline. Several political officials and members from the local community participated in the hourslong protest amid tight security measures implemented by the Lebanese Army and the Internal Security Forces, with main roads into the town blocked during the event.
