Choueifat residents demand closure of Costa Brava landfill
Residents of Mount Lebanon’s Choueifat gathered evening to demand the permanent closure of nearby Costa Brava landfill on June 12, state media said.
A number of locals and environmental activists took part in the protest to demand an end to dumping garbage in the controversial landfill, the National News Agency said.
The landfill has been in the spotlight since seagulls, believed to be attracted by the waste, became a threat to civil aviation safety. It has also been reported that the garbage could also alter climate near the runway.
June 12 is the official deadline set for the final closure of the dump.
The protest comes hours after Choueifat Mayor Ziad Haidar pleaded to officials for immediate action on the Costa Brava landfill near Beirut's international airport.
