BEIRUT: The owners of shops in the eastern city of Baalbeck briefly blocked the road to demand an end a spike in robberies in the area.

The National News Agency reported that protesters in Bechara Khoury Streets were joined by head of Union of Baalbek's Municipalities, Nasri Othman.

Othman demanded an "end to the daily thefts," vowing that people would not remain immobile.

He called on security forces to assume their responsibilities.

Overnight Saturday, unidentified assailants broke into a cell phone shop owned by Naser al-Masri in Bechara Khoury Street in Baalbeck in one of the area’s most recent reported robbery.

The amount of losses is yet to be estimated.

Baalbeck, located in the northern part of the Bekaa Valley, is known to be a safe haven for fugitives, and revenge killings are common in the region.

Kidnappings for ransom, car theft, arbitrary gunfire, murder, among other crimes are rife, both in the city and surrounding towns in the Baalbek district.

Recently, key local figures have led awareness campaigns against these illicit activities.
