BEIRUT: Police have arrested a man suspected of being involved in a car theft ring, a statement released by the Internal Security Forces said.

The statement said that the by ISF's Information Bureau arrested the 28-year-old suspect, identified as Aa.M., last week in an ambush in the eastern town of Doris.

He was in a stolen black Toyota RAV 4 at the time of the arrest.

The suspect admitted to being involved in a robbery ring, in which they stole cars and smuggled them into Syria. The ring stole 17 cars in total, eight of which the suspect was personally involved in, the statement added.

The suspect, who has two arrest warrants against him as well as an additional search warrant for the car he was caught in, also confessed to transporting the cars through the Lebanese border villages of Qasr and Matraba, and finally into Syrian territory.

He and the stolen vehicle were brought to the International Theft Repression Bureau for further questioning.
