Palestinian gunmen and radical Muslims (members of a group called Jund Allah) from Tripoli attacked the villages of Chekka and Hamat, populated by Christians traditionally loyal to the SSNP. They shut down the exit of a tunnel in which dozens of civilians were fleeing toward the town of Batroun. They were trapped inside and burned in their cars. Around 200 civilians were killed, and homes were looted and burned over the course of several days.
