Army-smugglers shootout kills Syrian woman
A Syrian woman was killed and four other people were injured in the Bekaa Thursday, after smugglers exchanged fire with the Lebanese Army during a smuggling operation involving nearly 200 Syrians, according to a statement issued by the Army. The group was being smuggled into Lebanon through an illegal route, but were spotted by Army personnel. According to the statement, the smugglers opened fire toward the Army and also in the direction of the people being smuggled, with Army soldiers returning fire. The statement did not say explicitly which party was responsible for the casualties.
A “large number” of the group of Syrians were arrested and those who were wounded were transported to a hospital in the area for treatment. The Army is still working on tracking down the shooters, the statement said.
