The Lebanese Army was shot at while arresting a man suspected of being involved in clashes against the Army in the eastern town of Arsal, according to an Army statement.

The suspect, identified as Jamal Hussein al-Hujeiri, was arrested for “participating alongside armed groups and terrorist organizations in the attack on the Lebanese Army and Internal Security Forces during the battle of Arsal in 2014,” the statement said.

During the arrest, which was also carried out in Arsal, soldiers were reportedly attacked by gunmen, leaving one soldier lightly wounded and two military vehicles damaged, according to the statement.

The suspect is being investigated by the judiciary, the statement said, while the Army continued to follow up on the gunmen in an effort to arrest them.

Daesh (ISIS) and Jabhat Fatah al-Sham – formerly known as the Nusra Front – briefly overran Arsal in 2014.

When the militants withdrew from the town they took over 30 Army and police personnel with them. Many were subsequently killed or released, with nine servicemen’s bodies exhumed after a Hezbollah-led offensive in July routed out the militants from Lebanon’s territory.

This security incident was mapped according to the closest possible location.
