Supporters of former lawmaker Hasan Yaccoub Friday briefly blocked the Beirut-Damascus international highway in both directions to protest the MP’s arrest in connection with the kidnapping of late Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi’s son.
Angry followers used burning tires to cut off the main highway linking Beirut with the Syrian capital Damascus in Miqneh, 10 kilomters north of the eastern city of Baalbek, at 9 am.
An hour later, the protesters decided to extinguish the burning tires and open the road.
Security forces were on hand but not visible.
Yaacoub was arrested Thursday over his alleged role in the kidnapping of Gadhafi’s youngest son Hanibbal.
State Prosecutor Samir Hammoud ordered Yaacoub’s arrest shortly after he was summoned by the Internal Security Forces’ Information Branch for questioning on his suspected involvement in last week’s abduction of Hannibal Gadhafi, viewed as a witness in the disappearance of influential Shiite spiritual leader Imam Musa Sadr in Libya 37 years ago.
