The Lebanese Army  arrested what a security source said was one of the country’s biggest arms dealers in a dawn raid in the eastern town of Brital.

The source told The Daily Star that Army Intelligence conducted the raid and detained A. Mazloum, who was allegedly selling unlicensed firearms. Mazloum was one of the most infamous arms dealers in the area, conducting business both in Lebanon and Syria, the source said.

The source added that the suspect is a retired Army officer and had dozens of outstanding warrants out in his name at the time of his arrest.

Situated in the Bekaa Valley, Brital is close to the Syrian border and has a reputation for lawlessness.

The state-run National News Agency had reported Tuesday that the Anti-Terrorism Bureau had arrested H.A. in Barr Elias, also on suspicion of arms dealing.
