Army deploys to ease post-election chaos
The Lebanese Army and security forces deployed across Beirut Monday evening to calm tensions after Prime Minister Saad Hariri called for action to end the “chaos in the streets.”
Groups of men on mopeds roamed the streets and there had been reports of scuffles between supporters of opposing political parties.
A dispute reportedly emerged between supporters of Hariri’s Future Movement and groups of Hezbollah supporters in Aisha Bakkar with a fight breaking out.
A security source told The Daily Star that videos being circulated on social media purporting to show armed men in the streets of Beirut were false.
The Army set up a temporary checkpoint in the Beshara Khoury area.
Separately, Speaker Nabih Berri denounced the actions of some of Amal Movement and Hezbollah supporters, saying their practices were “offensive” and “irresponsible.”
“This doesn’t express the behaviors and ethics ... of Imam Musa Sadr or Hezbollah and these actions are refused with all measures,” the speaker said in a statement.
