Army deploys in Beirut to calm electoral tensions
The Lebanese Army and security forces deployed across Beirut Monday evening to calm tensions after Prime Minister Saad Hariri called for action to end the "chaos in the streets."
The Internal Security Forces announced a 72-hour ban on mopeds and motorcycles across Beirut in a bid a bit to stop further incidents of lawlessness.
Groups of men on mopeds roamed the streets and there were reports of scuffles between supporters of opposing political parties.
A dispute reportedly emerged between supporters from Hariri's Future Movement and groups of Hezbollah supporters in Aisha Bakkar with a fight breaking out. Things reportedly calmed quickly in the area.
A security source told The Daily Star that the Army deployed across Beirut in a bid to calm the situation and that videos being circulated that showed armed men in the streets of Beirut were untrue.
Hariri called for the Lebanese Army and Internal Security Forces to take quick measures before things get out of hand.
The Army also deployed in Bechara al-Khoury area, manning a temporary checkpoint.
