BEIRUT: The Lebanese Army carried out extensive security measures in the northeastern border town of Arsal in search for fugitives.

The army erected permanent and temporary checkpoints in the town, carrying out patrols in the town and on the outskirts.

The National News Agency reported that more than 10 wanted suspects were apprehended throughout the day.

The outskirts of Arsal see frequent fighting between radical Islamist groups Jabhat Fatah al-Sham – formerly known as the Al-Qaeda-linked Nusra Front – and Daesh (ISIS). Extremists have intermittently clashed on the town's outskirts over territorial disputes.

The two extremist groups have been entrenched on the outskirts of Arsal since they overran the town in August 2014.
