BEIRUT: Demonstrators in the northern district of Akkar blocked the main road in Akkar al-Atiqa with burning tires to protest "illegal competition" from Syrians.

The National News Agency reported that the demonstrators were protesting the rising numbers of Syrian labors in the area and business owners.

They demanded Labor Minister Mohammad Kabbara and Akkar Governor Imad Labaki to intervene and "protect the interests of Lebanese businesses and workers."

They warned of escalatory moves if no action was taken.

In the sixth year of the neighboring Syrian crisis, Lebanon has increased an already tight set of residency rules for Syrian nationals.

Refugees are required to sign notarized pledges barring them from work in Lebanon when registering for residency permits. Some Syrians have also been requested to sign documents vowing to return to Syria following the expiration of their residency documents.

This security incident was mapped according to the closest possible location.
