January 1989: Fighting concentrated in Beirut’s southern suburbs reached Iqlim al-Tuffah. On February 1, Reuters’ monthly report said the death toll was the highest ever recorded in one month’s time, with 660 people killed, 500 of whom victims of the Amal-Hezbollah war. While this figure did not specify the number of civilians, on February 8, Amal announced that 25 of its fighters had been killed, and Hezbollah announced that 30 fighters were killed.
