Electricité Du Liban (EDL) part-timers set up on Thursday tents inside the company's premises in line with the press conference of EDL General Director Kamal Hayek, National News Agency correspondent reported. Responding to a question about setting up tents by part-timers, Hayek said, "Setting up tents is rejected; and the Lebanese administration has many bases and steps which can be adopted to object administrative decisions." He hoped that the protesters would remove the tents and resort to their rights in using appropriate objection bases. Electricite Du Liban's contract workers on Wednesday staged a sit-in at EDL's premises within the frame of the part-timer's pledge of continued protests against a state memo which allows full-time jobs to 800 out of 1800 part-time employees. Libnan Makhoul, head of the contract workers' committee said in a delivered word that he'd been subject to pressure and threats for accusing private service companies of being behind the major squandering hitting EDL. Makhoul said that the company's accounts should be subject to heightened scrutiny to determine which side had burned EDL with huge squandering figures -- part-timers or private service companies. A brawl erupted Thursday between striking Electricite du Liban contract workers and a bakery owner near EDL headquarters in Beirut leaving several men bruised, security sources said. The sources told The Daily Star the fight, with fists and sticks, broke out after the owner of a shop that sells mankoushe told strikers to protest away from his shop because they were disrupting his business. Police quickly intervened to end the scuffle.
