Eight armed suspects were killed and 41 were arrested in a raid carried out by the Lebanese Army Monday in Baalbeck's Brital, the Army confirmed in a statement.

Among those killed was the main wanted suspect, Ali Zeid Ismail, whose home in the village of Hamoudieh in western Brital was raided in an operation that started at around 9:30 a.m. and ended at 3 p.m. Ismail reportedly had several warrants out for his arrest.

No injuries were reported among Army personnel.

“The Army patrol was fired at by armed groups of suspect Ali Zeid Ismail and the patrol units had to retaliate, which lead to the killing of eight armed men and the arrest of 41 people, six of whom were injured,” a statement from the Army on Twitter reported after the incident.

Weapons and drugs were also seized in the raid, while those arrested were referred to the concerned authorities, according to the statement.

At least one Syrian national was killed in the raid. He was identified by the state-run National News Agency as Hussein Ali Matar. Matar threatened to blow himself up in the early stages of the raid, before he was shot dead by the Army, local media reported.

The NNA identified one of those arrested as M.Aa.A. and one injured detainee as Aa.Aa.I. He was transferred to Dar Al Amal University Hospital in Baalbeck and placed under heavy supervision.

The Army kept Hamoudieh under lock down during the raid, restricting people attempting to enter or exit the area, local media reported.

Army units were still deployed in the area as of 4 p.m., on the lookout for the remaining suspects.
