Conflict Incident Report
Two terrorists killed in a Lebanese Army operation
Two wanted suspected terrorists were killed in a firefight with a unit of the Lebanese Army early morning in the northeastern border town of Arsal, the military said in a statement.
Syrian nationals Yasser al-Ghawi and Atef al-Jaroudi were killed and three others were arrested during a raid by an Army. The statement said that the suspects resisted arrest prompting the shootout.
“An Army Intelligence unit raided a terrorist group in Arsal that was preparing to carry out terrorist operations,” the Army statement said. “When the terrorist group’s members tried to resist the raiding force, the patrol’s unit confronted them, which led to the death of Ghawi and Jaroudi and the arrest of three others.”
The Army said it had seized seven explosive devices ready to be used, in addition to an explosive belt and 50 kg of explosive material used to manufacture bombs. A number of hand grenades were also seized, the Army said.
Ghawi is believed to have been the mastermind behind a bombing that took place in Ras Baalbeck on May 22, 2017.
The Hezbollah-affiliate War Media Center said on its Twitter account that the Army’s operation in Arsal saw them raid a Daesh (ISIS) cell in the residence of Khaled Ezzeddine in al-Shafaq neighborhood.
It added that both Ghawi and Jaroudi are members of Daesh.
Citing sources, the WMC said that an explosive belt was detonated by one of the terrorists during the operation Tuesday.
