A security source told The Daily Star that the policeman killed Wednesday was shot during an altercation with a high-profile wanted suspect in Ouzai, south of Beirut.
The slain policeman was later identified as Lance Cpl. Afif Jaafar.
The source added that the shooter, identified as Issa al-Moqdad, stole a cellphone and fled to Ouzai after being chased by police.
“[Moqdad] robbed a Syrian resident ... before the shootout started,” the source said, adding that the Lebanese Army also intervened.
Moqdad was shot in the leg and eventually apprehended.
