BEIRUT: Demonstrators gathered in Ashrafieh’s Sassine Square to march for International Women’s Day. An estimated 1,000 protesters carried signs highlighting women’s issues in Lebanon.

“Marital rape is a crime,” one banner read. “We want women’s representation in Parliament that is not from the patriarchal, sectarian political parties,” another said.

Organized by several women’s rights groups, including Sawt al-Niswa, Fe-Male, the Dammeh Feminist Collective and the American University of Beirut’s Feminist Club, protesters marched under the slogan: “Different causes, same struggle.”

Foreign women, including migrant domestic workers, also participated.
