Security forces Tuesday recovered the bodies of two young Syrian sisters who drowned while swimming in the mouth of a south Lebanon river when a strong wave pulled them into the sea. The victims were identified as 8-year-old Rama al-Aly and her 12-year-old sister Raghed.
A friend of the sisters, Saleh Loulou, 12, told The Daily Star that he tried to save one of the sisters, but the water current kept pushing him away. Loulou said that several Syrian children were swimming in the river’s mouth when a large wave took them by surprise, sweeping the sisters away.
He added that “people were watching Rama and Raghed while they were drowning, and taking pictures with their phones, but no one tried to save them.”
Their bodies were transported to the Sidon Government Hospital.
