Protesters roadblock in Tripoli to denounce the responsibility and inaction of political leaders after a boat carrying migrants sank off

Tensions in the country remain high after at least six people were killed when a boat carrying migrants seeking to depart the country sank off the Tripoli coast late Saturday night. Tensions flared up again in Tripoli on Monday shortly after noon, with protesters blocking the road to Bab al-Tabbaneh with dumpsters. Shots were also reportedly fired during the funerals of the victims.

On Sunday, the army said the boat sank just after leaving Qalamoun, south of Tripoli, due to it being over safe capacity. One of the survivors disputed this, saying the boat sank after being chased by the army. Many hold the ruling class responsible for the conditions that led to the tragedy.
