Kurds protest Turkish Afrin offensive outside Russian Embassy in Beirut

Roughly a thousand Kurds held a demonstration near the Russian Embassy in Beirut’s Corniche al-Mazraa to protest the incursion of Turkish troops into Syria’s Kurdish-held Afrin region.

A security source told The Daily Star that the protest had “choked” traffic in the area, and that Internal Security Forces personnel had positioned themselves to prevent any attempt by protesters to enter the embassy.

Families of Islamist Prisoners in Lebanon Rally for Amnesty

Hundreds of protesters have rallied in the Lebanese capital demanding that Islamist prisoners be part of a discussed general amnesty.

The rally in central Beirut was attended by hundreds of families of Islamist prisoners. They were pressing the government to include their relatives in a general amnesty expected to come ahead of the country's first election in ten years.

The elections are scheduled for May. Lebanon had one general amnesty after the end of the civil war in 1990.

Marcel Ghanem Interrogated as Protesters Brave Rain to Show Solidarity

Prominent TV talk show host Marcel Ghanem appeared before Mount Lebanon First Examining Magistrate Nicola Mansour in connection with a controversial episode of his Kalam Ennas show, as protesters braved heavy rain to express solidarity with him outside the Baabda Justice Palace.

Ghanem’s lawyer, MP Butros Harb, meanwhile filed procedural defenses that were accepted by Mansour and the session was adjourned to February 2.

Ain al-Hilweh residents shutter UNRWA offices

The victims of recent Ain al-Hilweh clashes - August 2017 - shut down UNRWA offices in the area of the southern city of Sidon in protest against reported discrimination in compensation for damages.   The closure is the result of UNRWA’s "unjust decision," which distinguishes between affected neighborhoods that are compensated for the unfortunate clashes in the camp. The provided compensation, according to the protesters, does not include many of the houses and areas affected by the August clashes, which left four dead, dozens wounded and destroyed large parts of the camp. 

Families of Islamist detainees stage protest in Tripoli

Families of the Islamist detainees staged a sit-in outside the Tripoli Serail, calling on the authorities to grant general amnesty.
The protesters raised banners demanding the deputies of the northern city to present a draft law pertaining to releasing the detainees.

SSNP partisans demonstrated in front of Justice Palace

Partisans of the Syrian Social Nationalist Party (SSNP) are currently demonstrating in the vicinity of the Palace of Justice, chanting slogans in support of Habib Chertouni.
In the meantime, slogans in support of martyre President Bashir Gemayel are being heard inside the Palace of Justice, NNA reporter said.

Armed men protested the ISF security measures to remove illegal buildings

On October 25, gunshots were fired as police raided homes in Beirut’s southern suburbs to fine and remove illegally constructed buildings.   Armed men took the streets in Hay al-Sellom to protest the measures taken by security forces. Trash bins and tires were placed in the streets and set ablaze as hundreds of local residents headed to the streets.   The resident said that no previous warnings were given at all, and that the security forces started destroying illegal buildings around 3:30 am.
