On May 23, 1975, clashes spread across Beirut, with new rounds of confrontations with mortar shells from both sides. The following day, checkpoints manned by militias were set up in West Beirut, dividing the city in two.30 Abductions by all sides, religious-based killings, and mutilations (in many cases, either fingers or genitals cut off) became widespread, and the speed and frequency with which they were happening became the distinguishing feature of this conflict.
