10,000 Syrian refugees in Hatay, Turkey

Turkey finally opens the doors of Syrian refugee camps in the southern province of Hatay, which are housing more than 10,000 people.

Siege of Jisr ash-Shugur

On 4 June 2011, the Syrian military launched an operation in the Syrian city of Jisr ash-Shugur. The Guardian reported that officials in southern Turkey said that about 2,500 Syrians, many from Jisr al-Shughour, had crossed the border.

1,000 Syrian refugees reach Lebanon

On 14 May, Melissa Fleming, spokeswoman for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, said that the refugee flow into Lebanon had been fairly small at around 1,000 people.

Turkey witnesses first flow of Syrian refugees

The number of Syrians, crossing the Turkish border was estimated at 300 people. Turkish President, Abdullah Gül, said that Turkey had prepared for “a worst case scenario”. He also referred to the fact that Turkey had already set up a small camp in southern Hatay Province for 263 Syrians who had fled their country on 29 April.

The siege of Talkalakh

On 14 May 2011, during the 2011–2012 Syrian uprising, the Syrian military began an operation in the Syrian town of Talkalakh. Many residents have fled the fights in the area towards Lebanon, and this incident is considered one of the first events that triggered the influx the refugees to the outside of Syria.
