A soldier was seriously injured and a wanted man was killed in an exchange of fire in the area of al-Zaaytrieh in the North Metn town of Fanar, the Lebanese army announced on Wednesday.
The soldier was wounded when an army patrol came under fire by wanted armed men riding a Kia on Tuesday night, said a communique issued by the military command. The troops responded to the sources of fire, injuring one of the gunmen. But Ali Saad Zoaiter, who was taken to hospital, later succumbed to his wounds.
The soldiers seized guns, ammunition and drugs from the car but the gunmen managed to escape, said the communique.
The army is currently pursuing the suspects to arrest them and refer them to the judiciary, it added.

In the locality of Fanar Alzeiterah, army forces raid in the houses of wanted persons. Hamid Sharif Zuaiter, Khader Mohammed Zuayter, Mohammed Abbas Zuaiter and Yusuf Talal were arrested for being accused of drug trafficking.

Lebanese University’s 500 journalism students stayed at home Wednesday in a protest against a shooting incident, halting classes across the Fanar campus, north of Beirut.

The strike came a day after LU students said bullets whizzed over the head of one who had just left the Fanar campus where Labor Minister Sejaan Azzi was giving a lecture.

The student, identified by her first name, Joelle, was not hit when an armed man on a motorcycle opened fire into the air and then fled toward Zeaiterieh, a small, poor neighborhood tucked away in the Fanar hills.

A student at the Fanar campus said the incident occurred when Joelle left Azzi’s lecture to go home.

“As she left a man riding a motorcycle and carrying a pistol opened fire, but thank God Joelle was not hurt,” the student told the Voice of Lebanon radio station. She spoke on condition of anonymity.

LU students said Tuesday’s shooting was the third such incident this year.

A statement issued by the student body of the journalism school at the Fanar campus said classes would be suspended Wednesday and a sit-in will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday to demand protection.

“Fellow students, danger is getting closer with each day. Our security is in the hands of the divine providence. The government doesn't care and the university president is in a different world,” the statement said.

“Enough ... we have the right to learn and it’s the government’s duty to protect us,” it added.

The Lebanese Armed Forces' Orientation Directorate issued on Saturday the following statement:

"In the framework of pursuing wanted persons and suspects, a LAF force raided various suspicious locales in the regions of Sabtiyeh and Fanar in Metn and apprehended two Syrian nationals, one Palestinian and three Lebanese and confiscated arms and drugs in addition to cameras and telecom apparatuses.

In the region of Arsal, a LAF task force detained Syrian national, Mohammad Mustapha Mustapha, while attempting to cross from the outskirts into the town of Arsal on a motorcycle without valid identification papers. The detainee is suspected of belonging to a terrorist organization."
