Israeli forces threw sonic bombs at protesters

Israeli soldiers on Friday afternoon threw two sonic bombs at a number of youths who assembled at the Fatima cement wall on the Lebanese-Palestinian borders in the town of Kferkela, to participate in a demonstration in support of Jerusalem, NNA field reporter said.


The demonstration was called forth by Hezbollah in support and victory of Jerusalem.

Vigil highlights reach of gender-based violence

The murder of Rebecca Dykes this month turned a spotlight on to male violence against women in Lebanon, with activists noting that the crime was not an isolated incident in the country where gender-based violence is widely underreported. “This could happen to any woman, it could be me, it could be you. I’m extremely upset about everything that has happened,” Sahar Chalak told The Daily on the evening during a vigil held at Beirut’s National Museum for four recent victims of femicide that included Dykes.

Protesters call for more NSSF embezzlement prosecutions

Protesters called for National Social Security Fund employees involved in embezzlement to be prosecuted, saying that the charges already brought against several NSSF members were not enough.

The demonstration, held outside the Justice Palace in Adlieh, coincided with the trial hearing of NSSF Technical Committee head Samir Aoun. Around a dozen protesters, including judges, gathered to denounce what they said was a lack of comprehensive action against the misappropriation of funds at the state body.

Uber drivers protest Machnouk’s attacks on service

Uber drivers held an impromptu protest Thursday, a day after Interior Minister Nouhad Machnouk said that the popular ride-hailing app was unsafe and called on the Lebanese people to use local taxi companies instead. The minister’s remarks were made after a driver contracted with the company was named as the prime suspect in the murder of British national Rebecca Dykes.

Around 56 Uber drivers staged the Thursday morning demonstration near the Beirut Digital District building Downtown where Uber’s Lebanon offices are located.

Protesters rally against attacks on press freedom

Over 100 protesters gathered outside the Justice Ministry to demonstrate against what they said was increasing repression of Lebanon’s media and charges leveled against television presenter Marcel Ghanem. The demonstration brought together civil society actors, journalists and politicians to push back against what was described as the Justice Ministry’s “growing suppression” of the media.

Protesters also warned that any authority that attempts to stifle freedom of expression would not refrain from committing more serious crimes in the future, local TV channel LBCI reported.
