Beirut protesters slam naturalization decree

The “My Nationality is My Dignity” campaign protested Sunday in support of granting Lebanese women the ability to pass their nationality onto their children, an issue that recently returned to the fore after the passage of a naturalization decree.

Demonstrators gathered at Riad al-Solh square in Downtown Beirut, calling to overturn laws that currently prohibit Lebanese women from passing their citizenship onto their children and foreign spouses.

Protest for General Amnesty in Tripoli

Three women and a man were injured Friday after a van drove into a protest in Tripoli’s al-Nour Square held in demand of general amnesty for Islamist prisoners, the state-run National News Agency reported.

Security forces and dozens of residents were seen running after the vehicle in a video posted online by local Facebook news page Tripoli News Network. A person’s screams could be heard in the distance.

Extremist sheikh announces hunger strike for general amnesty

A notorious Islamist sheikh incarcerated in Roumieh Prison announced Thursday that he, along with other Islamist prisoners, had begun a hunger strike pending the approval of a general amnesty law.

Islamist prisoners' families demand ‘all-inclusive’ amnesty

 Families of Islamist prisoners staged protests across Lebanon Friday, urging officials to speed up the issuance of an amnesty law.

The protests, which included demonstrations in Sidon, Baalbek and Tripoli, also demanded that the amnesty be “all-inclusive,” after President Michel Aoun affirmed Thursday that such amnesty would not include those involved in the killing of Army personnel.

Disabled Lebanese protest proposed ministry cuts

Hundreds of disabled persons and activists gathered Thursday near the presidential palace in Baabda to protest a potential 20 percent cut to the Social Affairs Ministry’s 2018 budget.

The protesters were bussed to the area from across Lebanon by the National Federation for Persons with Disabilities, which represents some 100 groups dedicated to fighting for disabled rights.

Teachers across Lebanon stage ‘one-day warning strike

Teachers across Lebanon skipped school to protest recent heavy-handed measures taken against colleagues when they were protesting a lack of government action on wage stagnation and working conditions. The “one-day warning strike” was held to demonstrate against the treatment of teachers who protested Thursday at Baabda Palace, spokesperson for the Association of Secondary School Teachers Nazih al-Jibawi said at news conference at the association’s UNESCO offices.

Civil society speaks up against incinerator plans

A group of members from civil society gathered in Beirut’s Riad al-Solh Square to protest the government’s adoption of plans to use waste incinerators across the country. “We hold the Beirut municipality, its mayor, the deputy mayor and 22 of its members responsible for the decision to use incinerators,” one protester said in a televised broadcast from the demonstration. She added that a lawsuit would be filed if this decision was not revoked by the Beirut municipality.

Families of Abra detainees staged protest in Sidon

Families and relatives of Abra detainees staged a sit-in in front of Bahaa Din Hariri Mosque, in the city of Sidon, demanding amnesty for their sons.

The families carried banners calling for the general amnesty.
 

10 teachers arrested at Baabda protest

Ten teachers were reportedly arrested by security forces during a large protest that blocked roads near the presidential palace in Baabda Thursday.

Hundreds of teachers and professors gathered to protest against their stagnating wages and short term contracts.

Some clashes between demonstrators and riot police were reported.

Education Minister Marwan Hamadeh denounced the actions of security forces as "unacceptable violence in a republic that claims respect for freedoms," local media quoted him as saying.
