2011: Additional products on the list of subsidised products of the General Compensation Fund (CGC)
Saturday, January 1, 2011
Just before the fall of his regime, the president Ben Ali tried to answer the popular protest by adding canned tomatoes, powdered sugar, pasta, and couscous to the list of subsidised products. The semi-skimmed milk subsidy was also reinstated after it was lifted in 2009. This expansion of the CGC’s scope occurred against a background of rising international cereal prices that resulted in a sharp increase of allocated funds to the CGC from 2010 to 2012 (from 584 million dinars in 2010 to 1,260 million dinars in 2012 [Hammami 2014]).
